Maintainer Operator
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists with road maintenance including re-surfacing, shaping for adequate drainage, and snow/ice and debris removal.
- Blades and shapes road surface to improve safety and operates truck to haul and spread granular surfacing materials.
- Assists with construction of new driveways and driveway extensions.
- Reports damaged signs and/or roads to Road Superintendent.
- Assists with installation of new roadway pipe, culvert or bridge.
- Reports maintenance work needed for equipment and performs operator-level maintenance work to assigned equipment.
- Mows road shoulders, cuts trees and removes brush as needed.
- Maintains time and equipment records.
- Assists Grading crew and/or Bridge crew when working within one’s assigned territory.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Class B Commercial Drivers License with air brake endorsement
SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Understanding of basic math including adding, subtracting, multiplication, and division.
- Capacity to multi-task and prioritize job activities to achieve maximum overall results
- Ability to operate basic hand tools.
- Knowledge in operating heavy machinery including motor grader, tractor and a dump truck.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the principles, practices, materials and equipment in road maintenance and construction.
- Ability to follow directions.
- Ability to work with others in the attainment of department duties and organization goals and to and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with internal contacts.
- Ability to recognize situations in which repairs/new projects are needed and report the information in a timely manner to the appropriate individual.
- Strong organizational skills.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
This position will sometimes require working overtime, including non-traditional hours. This will be a regular occurrence during snow removal in the winter months.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and high, precarious places. The employee is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
The work environment will include temperatures varying from extreme heat in the summer to extreme cold in the winter.
These positions report to the designated locations listed above with occassional travel to Vinton.
