Maintenance Superintendent
Position Responsibilities:
- Inspects county roads, bridges, and signs, taking notice of needed repairs or maintenance; consults with County Engineer about necessary repairs.
- Supervises and inspects maintenance and repair projects performed by individual operators and crews.
- Serves as a liaison with landowners seeking opinions on the work they want done.
- Instructs individuals in various techniques, practices, and operation of the equipment.
- Calls out maintenance crew for snow removal, flood damage, and other emergencies.
- Oversees the mowing of county roadsides.
- Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving problems.
- Supervises daily operations for safety of personnel, vehicles, and heavy equipment.
- Performs related work as directed
Education & Experience Required:
- High school Diploma or GED
- Valid Class A CDL
- 10 years of roadway construction and/or maintenance experience.
Essential Skills Required:
- Possess effective leadership skills to effectively plan, assign, supervise and direct the work of others.
- Ability to determine priorities and schedule and assign work to meet departmental objectives.
- Ability to utilize effective verbal, written and listening communication skills.
- Comprehensive knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of road systems.
- Knowledge and ability to interpret and enforce OSHA requirements and internal safety policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of appropriate use(s) of various light and heavy equipment including, but not limited to: motor grader, dragline, heavy truck, back-hoe, end-loader, grade-all low-boy, bulldozer.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff, as well as external stakeholders.
Physical Demands/Work Hours:
While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, and walk and drive. Frequently, the employee is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must continually lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision as required to operate equipment both in daylight and at night, and sometimes in hazardous weather conditions (such as rain, snow, sleet).
Will be required to work a non-traditional work schedule as projects necessitate.
Work will be in an indoor office environment approximately 25% of the time and outdoors 75% of the time.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and high, precarious places. The employee is exposed to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, airborne particles, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
The work environment will include temperatures varying from extreme heat in the summer to extreme cold in the winter.
