ATV/ORV Ordinance - Effective May 25, 2016

DNR Application

If you purchase a recreational vehicle from a registered dealer, it is the dealer’s responsibility to send all paperwork and fees to the County Recorder for registration and transfer.

If you purchase a recreational vehicle from an individual please contact our office for the registration and titling process.

All-Terrain Vehicles 

Renew your ATV before your expiration date of December 31st of each year to avoid a $5.00 penalty. Renewals can be made as early as Sept. 1st of each year for the next renewal period. An operator of an ATV shall carry the registration certificate either in the vehicle or on the person of the operator when the ATV is in use.  Also, proof of financial liability insurance card shall be carried on the machine. The decal shall be affixed to the rear of the ATV so that the decal is clearly visible.

Registration renewals can be purchased in the Recorder's office by cash, check, or debit/credit card.

Snowmobiles

Renew your snowmobile before your expiration date of December 31st of each year to avoid a $5.00 penalty.  Renewals can be made as early as Sept. 1st of each year for the next renewal period. An operator of a snowmobile shall carry the registration certificate either in the vehicle or on the person of the operator when the snowmobile is in use. Also, proof of financial liability insurance card shall be carried on the machine. The decal shall be affixed to the windshield of the snowmobile so that the decal is clearly visible. 

Registration renewals can be purchased in the Recorder's office by cash, check, or debit/credit card.

Fees

  • Registered in the current year: $18.50
    • Additional $5 for a partial year or late penalty
  • Title: $13.50
  • Lien: $13.50
  • User permit/trail pass fee for public use: $18.50

Tips
When purchasing a Snowmobile - you need to have the signed title and sale amount indicated on the reverse side of the title.  January 1, 1998, all snowmobiles were titled.

Antique Snowmobiles
A snowmobile manufactured prior to 1984 may be registered for a one-time fee. Registration as an antique snowmobile exempts the owner from annual registration requirements for the machine. If the antique snowmobile is operated on public land, public ice or a designated snowmobile trail, the requirement to display the IDNR User Permit applies.

New Registration or Transfer

Sales of ATV, ORV or snowmobile in Iowa are subject to the state sales tax rate of 6% and the applicable 10 cal option tax. This applies to sales by individuals as well as dealers.

Hunting & Fishing

Purchase your hunting, habitat, fishing, trout, deer, turkey, migratory bird, federal duck stamp, fur harvester licenses here in the Recorder's Office. We now offer a durable hard card for $6.

Lifetime licenses are available for persons age 65 and older.

Licenses can be purchased in the Recorder's office by cash, check or debit/credit card.

Boats

2022 is the year to renew your boat for a 3 year time period-expiration 2025. Renew your boat before your expiration date of April 30th of every 3rd year to avoid a $5.00 penalty. There is a grace period until June 30th to avoid penalty. Renewals, duplicate registrations, & duplicate titles can be done at any county recorder office. Renewals can be made as early as January 1st for the next renewal period.  An operator of a boat shall carry the registration certificate on board and be available for inspection by an enforcement officer whenever vessel is operated.  The registration number and decals must be displayed on each side of the boat and clearly visible. We now offer a durable hard card for $6.

Boat Registrations and Titles

Registration renewals can be purchased in the Recorder's office by cash, check or debit/credit card.

Sales of boats and other watercraft in Iowa are subject to the state sales tax rate of 6% and the applicable local option tax. This applies to sales by individuals as well as dealers. Anyone purchasing a boat from an individual must obtain a signed Bill of Sale that shows the cost of the boat or indicate that amount on reverse side of registration or title. Anyone purchasing a boat from a dealer will need the purchase agreement showing sale amount.

Tips
When purchasing a Boat (17' or longer or previously titled) - you will need to have the signed title and sale amount indicated on the reverse side of the title. When purchasing a Boat less than 17' - you will need to have the signed registration and sale amount indicated on the reverse side of registration.
